He obtained his Classical High School Diploma in 1984 and, in 1987, graduated in Cello in Bologna under the guidance of Maestro M. Godoli.
He was a founding member of the Quartetto di Bologna, which was awarded two scholarships by the European Community. He furthered his studies with Maestro Piero Farulli at the renowned Accademia Chigiana in Siena, undertaking an intensive five-year concert career. During this period, the quartet performed both abroad and in prestigious Italian concert seasons.
He has won several competitions, including first prize at the M. Rietmann “Città di Genova” Competition for Young Concert Artists in 1987, as well as orchestra competitions. He has collaborated with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Regio di Parma, RAI in Turin, RAI in Naples, the Orchestra da Camera di Padova e del Veneto, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he has been a permanent member since 1989.
From 1990 to 1993, he held the position of Principal Cello with the International Chamber Ensemble of Rome, undertaking three tours in the United States and Canada and recording a CD.
He attended the Advanced Studies Courses at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, graduating in 1993 under the guidance of Maestro Franco Maggio Ormezowski. In the same year, he placed second in the competition for Principal Cello of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and was ranked third in the audition for Principal Cello at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
In 1996, he won the competition for Second Cello with an obligation to serve as Principal Cello at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.
In 1999, during performances of J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under the direction of Maestro Peter Schreier, he served as Principal Cello and continuo bass of the second instrumental group.
He is regularly invited to perform as Principal Cello with the Teatro di Cagliari, following a successful audition.
He pursues an intensive chamber music career, which has led to numerous recordings and concert tours throughout the world.
Alongside his career as a cellist, he is also active as a conductor. He studied conducting with Maestro Bruno Aprea and furthered his training with conductors including D. Gatti and E. Shelle. He was also selected for the audition process for the conducting courses held by Maestro Renzetti at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese in Pescara.
He has conducted concerts in Italy and abroad, including in Sarajevo. His conducting engagements include a cycle of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos at the Cappella Musicale Santa Maria dei Servi in Bologna and Mozart’s Coronation Mass at the Basilica dell’Aracoeli in Rome, in the presence of leading Italian state authorities.
He was invited by Maestro Valery Gergiev to attend productions at the Kirov Theatre in St. Petersburg and was subsequently admitted to the conducting course at the Higher Conservatory of the same city.
In May 1999, he worked as assistant to Maestro James Conlon at the Opéra Bastille in Paris for the staging of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
In February 2001, he conducted the Orchestra of the Academy of Arts of Tirana, followed in March by a performance with the Orchestra Regionale Toscana.
His musical culture and experience have been shaped by more than ten years of close collaboration with some of the world’s greatest conductors, including Maazel, Chung, Giulini, Bernstein, Solti, Rattle, Mehta, Gatti, Sawallisch, and Prêtre, with whom he was able to establish privileged artistic and personal relationships.
In December 2001, he inaugurated the Sacred Music Season in Lazio with Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Gloria at the Church of Santi Apostoli in Piazza Venezia, Rome. In February 2002, he inaugurated the concert season at the “Gianicolo,” with pianist Marcella Crudeli as soloist.
Furthermore, following previous agreements with Maestro Luciano Berio, he was scheduled to conduct a concert with the Youth Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
