He graduated at a very young age under the guidance of Maestro Emilio Benzi at the Antonio Vivaldi Conservatory in Alessandria and subsequently pursued further studies with Franco Petracchi at the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona.
He won auditions and competitions with some of Italy’s most prestigious orchestras, including the Arena di Verona (1984), Teatro La Fenice in Venice (1986), and RAI in Rome (1986), where he was a permanent member until 1996. In 1996, he won the competition for Principal Double Bass of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, a position he currently holds.
He is a founding member of the double bass quartet “The Bass Gang,” with which he has toured extensively in the United States, Portugal, Japan on several occasions, Korea, and, more recently, Germany with the Berliner Symphoniker. The quartet has released four CDs and a DVD.
Antonio Sciancalepore collaborates as Principal Double Bass with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini in Parma, the Orchestra Leonore in Pistoia, the Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino, the international orchestra MFHR – Musicians For Human Rights, and I Solisti di Pavia under the direction of Enrico Dindo.
He has also collaborated with the Orchestra Mozart under the direction of Claudio Abbado and with the Ensemble dei Solisti d’Europa.
Since 2012, he has been invited to perform as Principal Double Bass with the chamber orchestra “Archi dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia.”
He has taught at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome as a professor of double bass and orchestral performance practice. He is also regularly invited to teach advanced masterclasses at various conservatories and prestigious institutions in Italy and abroad.
